Intern/HMO/RMO (PGY1-5)

Hospital doctors can be more at risk than they realise. Hospitals typically do not provide support for doctors attending the coroners court and Ahpra investigations.

MIPS is your partner through uncertainty, providing more understandable insurance cover, risk education, and expert advice specific to your career.

If you have already commenced a registrar training program then you may be eligible for membership with a registrar basis.

If you expect to enter an accredited or un-accredited registrar position soon, you may also be able to take advantage of membership with a registrar basis. MIPS supports registrars with cover for their practice, such as locums, surgical assisting etc where they are not indemnifed by their employer. Conditions apply.

Do I still need insurance if I’m covered by my employer?

If you’re working for an employer (e.g. hospital), you may be covered for some adverse or unexpected events, however there may be instances where your employer is unable to cover or assist you.

The minimum level of professional indemnity insurance required by Ahpra only relates to civil claims, so the indemnity provided by your employer might not cover you for issues relating to:

  • professional and disciplinary matters
  • employment, training program and university disputes
  • pursuit matters

MIPS brings experienced foresight to help you build a risk prevention mindset and reinforce your sense of confidence.

Understanding your cover?

Your Category

Your category is based on your Ahpra registration. If you are an intern, resident medical officer (RMO), or a hospital medical officer (HM0), one of the following categories may apply.

Pre-registration practice (e.g. intern)

Your MIPS Membership may be under the Pre-registration practice category if you are undertaking a healthcare placement (e.g. medical observership) prior to being registered with Ahpra.

This category provides cover for preregistration healthcare placements where you are under the appropriate supervision of a registered healthcare practitioner who holds the appropriate qualifications.

Appropriate supervision includes direct or indirect supervision that provides adequate access to communication, oversight, interaction, direction, and support from your supervisor throughout the activity.

You are not covered for the provision of healthcare:

• in any capacity other than as an observer; or

• where you represent yourself or

hold yourself out as an Australian registered practitioner.

You are not eligible for this category if you are registered with Ahpra.

Medical officer – general practice (e.g. Resident Medical Officer (RMO)

Your MIPS Membership may be under the Medical officer – general practice category if you hold general, limited, or provisional registration and most of your practice is undertaken in a general practice setting.

For a list of treatments and procedures covered under this category refer to the Member Handbook.

You require an endorsement if you are undertaking any services listed under the GP procedural category and/or any Minor cosmetic services as defined by MIPS.

Medical officer (e.g. Hospital Medical Officer (HMO)

Your MIPS Membership may be under the Medical officer category if you hold general, limited, or provisional registration, and most of your practice is undertaken in a hospital (or non-general practice) setting.

For a list of treatments and procedures covered under this category refer to the Member Handbook.

You require an endorsement if you are undertaking any services listed under the GP procedural category and/or any Minor cosmetic services as defined by MIPS.

Your Practice basis

In addition to your category, your MIPS Membership also factors in the type of practice you undertake. Your practice basis describes, for example:

  • If your practice is employer indemnified, not employer indemnified, or a combination of both.
  • If you have obtained specialist registration, or you are currently undertaking or enrolled in a specialist training program.
  • If you have completed your healthcare studies within the last five years.
  • If you undertake practice that requires an endorsement.

How are my membership fees calculated?

We use a primarily risk-based approach to calculate membership fees and work hard to keep them as low as possible. Your individual membership fee is based on your membership details, which means your fee responds to how your practice changes over time.

Your Member Benefit Statement includes your individual membership details for the current and three prior membership periods. The factors we consider in our calculation are:

  • Your category (e.g. General surgery; Dentist; Psychiatry)
  • Your practice basis (e.g. Employer indemnified; Recent graduate)
  • Your estimated annual gross billings and/or salary or hours for practice that is not employer indemnified
  • Whether your type of practice requires an endorsement (e.g. Minor cosmetic services; Spinal surgery; Bariatric surgery)
  • The state/territory you practise in
  • Your retroactive cover date
  • Your claims history
  • Your sex
  • Any specific factors that impact your risk.
  • Any loadings including a risk surcharge. If applicable, the risk surcharge will be included in accordance with the Medical Indemnity Act 2002 (Cth).

We calculate your membership individually based on the information you provide. This approach ensures your fee reflects the contribution required to appropriately support and cover the risk to indemnify you. As your practice changes and develops, so does your membership fee. If you have recently commenced practice that is not indemnified by your employer (or moved to a higher risk practice classification), your membership fee may change.

What is your indemnity status?

Because you are 100% employer indemnified, MIPS can offer you membership on the ‘employer indemnified only’ basis so that you pay a lower membership fee than if you required cover for civil liability.

MIPS often supports employer indemnified only members with professional disputes, complaints made about them to Ahpra, healthcare services commissioners’ matters (e.g. NSW HCCC), investigations by state drug and poisons services and general assistance and medico-legal advice on issues such as informed consent, testamentary capacity, release of records etc.

Hospital and other practitioners employed in large practices (both dental and medical) can be left exposed when an employer is forced to step aside because of their primary duty of care to patients or to ensure independence when dealing with staff issues or Ahpra matters.

If you are in practice that is not employer indemnified, your MIPS membership fee may be tailored to your gross billings and salary. We price the membership based on your practice over the last 3 financial years and the year ahead (4 years in total). More information about pricing

If your practice changes and a portion of your practice becomes employer indemnified (e.g. 20%, working one day a week for a public hospital, where you are indemnified), then you can contact MIPS and have your classification amended which may result in a lower membership fee.

Maintaining your CPD can be costly and hard if you are exclusively in practice that is not employer indemnified. MIPS risk education is accredited by colleges such as the RACGP and counts towards your CPD. You can attend as many workshops or webinars as you like as part of your membership at no additional cost.

If you’re doing some employer indemnified  work, and also some practice that is not employer indemnified, MIPS can accommodate you. This is common for practitioners who are working a day or two in practice not indemnified by their employer a week.

When you request a quote simply tell us what percentage of your practice is employer indemnified  and what percentage is not.
